It doesn’t matter what type of business that you are trying to run, or where you want your career to go; one thing is for sure, you will be looking towards future success. Meditation can aid this success by providing clarity and reducing stress when it comes to making business decisions.
It is great to want to be successful in what you do, but the truth is that success might not be as easy to come by as you hope. If you want to maximise your chances of success there are plenty of things that you can do. One key thing to keep in mind is how your own mindset and mental wellbeing have an impact on how well you do.
You might not realise it, but things that you do on a daily basis, changes that you make to your life. This could be all you need to push you towards the success that you hope for. One example for this is meditation. Check out this entrepreneur blog, which helps you to figure out more about meditation and also learn why it might be worthwhile trying for yourself.
What do you mean by meditation?
The thing to remember when we are looking at meditation is that we don’t necessarily mean the form of meditation that you may think of. Our definition of meditation (for this blog post) concerns more mindfulness approaches. Check out Headspaces’s definition of mindfulness which is similar to ours
Mindfulness is when you focus your thoughts on one thing, often your breathing. This allows your mind to be centred on the here and now, rather than jumping around all over the place at a million miles an hour. Meditation for success should become part of your daily routine.
Not sure how this can help with your success in business? Well, here are some of the key things that meditation, in the form of mindfulness can do for you and your business and success.
It gives you a way to be connected to yourself
Simply living in these modern times can be tiring on our mental wellbeing. We are constantly told how to look, how to feel and how we should behave. Which, over time can leave us questioning who we really are. In turn, this means that we can lose our own values and our own emotions, we can start to forget what is important to us and what we see as a key part of our lives.
Success will often relate to how well connected we are to ourselves as people. If we know what is important to us as people, then we can start to think about how we can apply that to the business decisions that we make.
It helps you to handle stress better
Stress is something that is part and parcel of everyday life. Especially when you are trying to run your own business. Whilst there isn’t much that you can do to stop these everyday stresses, what you can do is change how you react to them and how they impact you.
The idea of meditation is that it helps your brain to release some of the thoughts, worries and stress that has built up and allow you to focus on the things that are actually really important to you.
Your productivity can improve
Multi-tasking can be hard to do, and it does require plenty of focus and brain power. As we have already covered, meditation can help your brain to focus on the key task in hand, which means that you can get things done much quicker and be ready to move onto the next thing. It also helps your brain to compartmentalise the information that you do have in there, which means that those key tasks are not going to get confused.
It improves your brain function
Your brain is responsible or taking, sorting and then storing all the information that you see on a daily basis. In order to do this, it needs to be in peak condition. When you practice meditation, you are helping your brain to rest, which means that when it needs to fire up and get through all the information that you take in, it can do so with ease.
Learning and retaining information can be improved
Following on from above, studies have been conducted into whether meditation can help when sitting tests or exams. It has been found that those students who meditate will have a higher memory capacity and will be able to achieve better results. The main reason for this is largely down to the fact that these people don’t have the issue of a wandering mind when they should be focusing.
Work alone? Meditation can help stop loneliness
Whilst loneliness and success aren’t necessarily linked, loneliness and running your own business can be. Working for yourself means that you will often spend lots of time on your own. Which leaves you feeling rather lonely and isolated. If you learn to focus yourself with meditation then you will still be aware of the world around you right now and you will feel connected, even when you are not with anyone else.
It has a positive impact on your brain, all the time
You will probably already know that happiness and positivity can only come from within, however, it seems that being positive is not something that always comes naturally. Meditation reminds your brain how to be positive and then this is something that it will remember to do in the long term. Whilst positive thinking won’t cure all your business issues, it will help you to stay happy when things might be going wrong around you.
Meditation can help anxiety and depression
You should never let your mental wellbeing get in the way of running your own business, however, sometimes it can just be inevitable, and you can end up with feelings of anxiety and depression. As meditation allows you to focus on the moment (and then in turn the positive that is all around you) you can use this to help to centre all those positive thoughts and feelings, which can help to reduce the feelings of anxiety and depression that an sometimes creep in and cast doubt on all your amazing business plans.
It will help you to be healthier
We know that it sounds strange to think that meditation can help your physical health; but studies have shown that it really can. The idea behind this is that meditation reduces your feelings of stress, which in turn will help any underlying medical conditions that you might have which are made worse by stress.
If you are feeling fit and well in yourself, then you are going to be much more able to focus on your business and you can give it your all and the more that you can give, the more that you will be able to get back.
You will sleep better
Running a business can leave you feeling exhausted and needing to relax and refresh ready for the next day. This means that you need to sleep as much as you can. There are plenty of reasons why you might find it hard to sleep, however, one common reason (particularly when it comes to running a business) is the fact that your brain is hugely active and is running over all the things that have happened throughout the day.
If you can’t switch off, then how can you ever expect yourself to drift off to sleep? Chances are that it will be difficult. Meditating before bed will help you to clear out your mind and not have to worry about everything that is going on. You can simply focus on the here and now; which, at that moment in time, will be getting an amazing night’s sleep.
You may come up with new ideas
When your mind is empty of all the concerns that it might have, then it has the space to be creative and come up with brand new ideas. Having these ideas can really help you to explore new avenues for your business and may take you some amazing paths that help you to achieve the success that you are searching for.
How to meditate for success
So, you know why it is a good idea to meditate when you run your own business, but how do you actually do this?
There are a wealth of different approaches to meditation, however, for us, it is probably best that we focus on the most basic and beginner’s way.
The aim of meditation is to clear your mind, to stop all those thoughts that have built up during the day from taking over and making you feel that you simply are have no space for the here and now.
The simplest way to do this is to sit, anywhere that is comfortable to you and then take some normal breaths in and out. Focus yourself on those breaths. Pay attention to them, notice them as they move in and then they move out again.
As you focus on this motion, you will find that those other thoughts simply drift out of your mind and you are left feeling clearer, feeling more focused and feeling that you are ready to get on with any task in hand. This meditation for success guide aims to maximize clarity so your business decisions are rational and calculated.
Focus on the moment
Mindfulness asks us to return to the moment that we are in and stay there. However, whilst that may seem like a simple concept, in practice it can be quite challenging to do. We, as people, by our very nature, want to have a million things in our heads at once and we simply are not used to sitting in silence, just being at one with our own bodies.
Some people find that the first few times of trying meditation that they simply cannot turn off their brain. However, others find it relatively simple to do. The main thing is that you keep trying. Sometimes it may take you 6 breaths, the next day 60. However, the main thing is that you are trying and that you are doing what you can to clear your mind.
Once you have noticed your breath and you feel that your mind is clearing, then you should follow your breathing pattern for two minutes. You need to deeply inhale and expand your belly. Then, you should exhale slowly, making sure that your out breathe is elongated and that your stomach fully shrinks too.
Focus on breathing
When the 2 minute is up, it is time to return to the “normal” world. You should give yourself time and space to do this. Be kind and patient with your brain as it returns to normal. Gently open your eyes and then take a moment to appreciate what you find around you. How do you feel right now physically? How do you feel mentally? What thoughts are in your head? Hopefully these are not some of the same thoughts that you found in there before you sat down to meditate.
Some people also find it helpful to have a mantra that they use during their times of meditation. They could repeat some phrases over again whilst they are focusing on their breath. The phrase that you use is entirely down to you, however, the benefit of doing this is if you ever feel that your stress levels are high and that you need to bring yourself back down, that perhaps you could repeat that phrase and remind yourself of how to focus on the moment in hand.
You might wonder how meditation and mindfulness can have an impact on running a business and its success. However, the truth is that sometimes a positive mindset can be the difference between reaching those goals and not quite getting there.
When things feel like you simply cannot get where you want to be, keeping your mind focused and not worrying about “what might happen” might be all that you need. So, whilst it may feel strange to start with, meditation for success might be something that you need to consider, giving you the extra push that you need.
Hopefully, this business blog has helped to show you just why it is worthwhile trying meditation for success. We wrote an article about optimizing your morning routine and it would be a great idea to incorporate some form of meditation into that.
